These districts represent some of the most challenging terrains in India—frontier districts where the Thar Desert dominates, where sand dunes stretch for miles, where summer temperatures soar to 48 degrees Celsius and winter brings bitter cold down to 5 degrees, where average annual rainfall measures a mere 277mm, and where 95% of the population resides in scattered and remote dhanis (hamlets) miles away from basic requirements.
